Pop Goes My Heart! Music and Lyrics

A friend's blog turned me onto this little gem. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I thought sharing this bit could be just what people need to get them through a tough day in the middle of finals, work, and life-related stress. I heard that the movie isn't much to shout about, but that this video makes the whole thing worth it. I believe it.

Okay, honestly? They've gotten the 80's video down pat! And my favorite part? Hugh Grant's hip swivel, of course! It was my favorite feature of Love Actually too, so I'm happy to see him utilizing this talent more. Perhaps we'll see him on Dancing With the Stars next. However, that really is him singing AND playing the piano! Go Hugh!

Anyway, so I wasn't one of the "lucky" kids who grew up with MTV or VH1, but I've seen my share of videos from the 80's and 90's. My question to you, is, what is your favorite? What makes it so special? (Please provide a link or URL , if at all possible.) Oh, and does anyone miss Pop-up Video as much as I do? Sigh. I sometimes wish life were like that. I mean, wouldn't your next blind or first date be SO much more entertaining with little blurbs that give you interesting and sometimes embarrassing information about your date? Feel free to also tell us where you wish you could see Pop-up balloons utilized in life.

Ok. Let's hear it!

I wish Pop up balloons could be used as I drive down the freeway thinking random, useless thoughts that really could change the world!

You know which pop-up video I always laughed at? "Hello" by Lionel Richie. It's one of those story-videos where this blind girl somehow sculpts Lionel Richie's head. The pop-ups were hysterical!

Steph - If only we COULD change the world with only our thoughts (or thought-bubbles)! That would certainly be interesting! :)

Michelle - Oh my gosh, I think I've seen that one! It IS hilarious! I mean, the song alone is hilarious...Lionel didn't even need an incredibly dorky video to go along with it.

Okay, I just have to say...I watch this Pop! Goes My Heart video at least once a day. I laugh every time! I even find something new to laugh at each time. I can't get over how silly Hugh Grant is allowing himself to be. Ah. I find it almost therapeutic - watching others be idiots, that is. Hm, what's My underlying issue, I wonder?

HEY! I was just BARELY asking my sister when this movie came out on DVD, because I loved it-- and then, I checked into the blog, and it was about this very movie. The stars have aligned. I always knew the 80s had some magical quality.

ya, wow. He can shake his booty but he struggles with the dancing thing at the begining. That's funny though.
I remember the a-ha video for "Take on Me"- I thought the cartoon version of him was so handsome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leMzjdb2WVw
And also, Tears for Fears "Head over Heals"- it was the flying library books that I totally remember.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eorWjH0HCo

Hi Christina! Hugh and company did a fantastic job with that video -- reminds me of Wham! or a-ha...or something... :) We didn't have MTV or VH1 either, but somewhere around 1985 or so there was this program that came on every afternoon where we lived in California called Hot! or something like that...my brother Dustin and I watched it just about every day. The video that sticks out in my memory the most from those days is Corey Hart's Sunglasses at Night...oh, those were the days! Um, yeah.

By the way, I like your blog. Have a great day! -- Kondrens

Oh yeah...here's the Sunglasses at Night video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alJ3zqRxbkk

Andrea - Doo-doo-doo-doo doo-doo-doo-doo! (Uh, that was the Twilight Zone music) That is so odd. I have no explanation for it. Oh, but I did just put it in my Netflix queue, so when it comes maybe we should have a movie night? 80's fans, Hugh fans, even Drew fans UNITE!

HS - Isn't his dancing hilarious?! It's horrible. All he HAS is the hip swivel! It's so bad, it's good, ya know?

The a-ha video I've seen before. Classic! The TFF video was a new one to me. See how sheltered I was? :( Thanks for the extra clips!

Brandon - HEY! How's it going? Long time no...uh, well, anything, really, eh? I'm glad you found my blog!

Oh, Corey Hart! I was mildly obsessed with his album "Boy in a Box", which I stole from my brother Joel. I had actually never seen a Corey Hart video, though, until you posted that link here, so thanks. He really had the pouty-lipped, smoldering, bad-boy thing down, didn't he? Perhaps it had something to do with his French-Canadianess. And uh...what the heck are his videos about? Was he obsessed with communist world domination or something? Very Big Brother.
Here's the link to "Boy in a Box"...judge for yourself. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ii6Yt2qwVZg

Uh, yeah...I'll take your word for it on the whole pouty-lipped, smoldering thing. It was the early/middle eighties, though, and the Soviet Union was still going strong at the time, so maybe that would explain the communist world domination motif.

I don't think I had ever even heard the song ("Boy in a Box"), much less seen the video before. What in the world?! I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what is going on there. He sits down for a shave and then suddenly they are all watching two guys play some game? Right...

I'm glad I found your blog yesterday, too. It's very entertaining.

I think... that if you can find it in your heart to love me... that you should add my blog to your "More Cool Blogs" list... if you want.............if you love me......

HS - oh DUH!! I'm sorry I haven't already done it! I really have been meaning to. Ok, I'll do it right after this, I promise!

Oh, and Andrea - ha! I'm still laughing about the fact that I thought you were a DIFFERENT Andrea. Ha. Funny. Maybe you should post more often on my blog, yo and then I won't assume it's not you!

Why do you have to live on the other side of the freakin' continent from me? I want a movie night...

Christina said...

Me too! Boo on this stupid cross-continental friendship thing! Hey, when do you move to WA? I'm going to be there in July (week of the 4th) for my family reunion. I'll be there well past the actual reunion, so perhaps we could work out some kind of reunion of our own? What fun!!

wynne said...

Yes please. We'll be there by then.

Yes, yEs, yeS, YES! I miss Pop Up Video! Really my life is not as full as it was during those few years of free cable TV in student housing.

This Peter Gabriel Sledehammer video actually showcases the coolness we missed by not having MTV/VH1

Christina here's a clip of your favorite band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20BZID081Vk&mode=related&search=

Wynne where are you moving to in WA? Precisely? Hmm?

Christina said...

Blue - See? This is what I'm talking about! Do Mom and Dad not realize how they've stunted our proper development by depriving us of MTV/VH1?

Jem!! AWESOME!! Yes, I loved her...and the Holograms! But I hated those nasty Misfits! Remember how I had a Jem doll and how she was like MASSIVE compared to our barbies so she always became the "bad girl" in our little barbie-play-scenarios? "Oh no! It's Jemzilla! Ahhh!!! Grab the children and RUN!!"

Wow. Dude - welcome. So, livin' up the 90's eh? Ok, I just have to say that I couldn't even make it through all of November Rain. Oy. The hair...THE HAIR!!!

Nada Surf was a new one...interesting, but the make-out session kind of turns my stomach.

And ah...classic Madonna. Dancing around like she doesn't care. Oh, and she's made up her mind. She's keeping her baby.

Okay...whoa. Somebody SERIOUSLY has way more free time than I do! Honestly, all I can say is wow. W....O....W.... Dude, I bow to your 90's video knowledge. Really. Most of these I've never seen before, although I have heard the songs (well most of them). And hey...I'll have you know that the Wilson Phillip's song was one of my favorites, once upon a time. "Just open your heart and your mind". Wise counsel indeed.
